Ankle Pain
Matthew S. Ivey, DPM

Dr. Matthew Ivey, a leading podiatrist at Richmond Bone & Joint Clinic and wound specialist at the Wound Care Center at Oak Bend Medical Center, has had tremendous success in treating chronic ankle pain with ankle arthroscopy. This procedure is much less invasive than open surgery and has proven effective in treating a number of injuries and conditions affecting the ankle joint.

According to Dr. Ivey, ankle arthroscopy is able to clean up the ankle joint and effectively reduce inflammation. It has also proven effective in addressing osteochondral lesions and fractures. As a former college soccer player and avid sportsman himself, Dr. Ivey finds that the less invasive ankle arthroscopy enables athletes and the active alike to more rapidly return to activity. Incisions are a fraction of the size of standard open surgery, reducing recovery time and risk of infection.

Dr. Ivey treats a large number of ankle sprains resulting from rigorous youth sports, as well as chronic ankle pain as a result of old, undetected fractures, joint deterioration or a number of different types of tendinopathies, including Achilles Tendon and Posterior Tibial Tendon Insufficiencies.

An advanced ankle arthrodesis procedure is also available arthroscopically for patients suffering from severe ankle pain and joint damage nonresponsive to more conservative treatment.

"It always surprises me how long a patient has lived with ankle pain by the time they come to see me," said Dr. Ivey. "There is so much we can do to conservatively address many of the conditions causing this chronic pain. The longer an individual waits to address the problem, the more serious it can become - leading to an unstable joint environment and ultimately osteoarthritis," he said.

Dr. Ivey also provides "cast for custom bracing" to patients in order to prevent further damage or a recurrence. As a wound specialist, he spends a significant amount of time educating the growing number of young adults diagnosed with diabetes about the early signs of diabetes-related foot conditions.

Dr. Ivey obtained his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from Barry University School of Graduate Medical Science in Miami Shores, Florida. He received both the Presidents and Student Leadership Awards. He completed his Residency from the Harris County Podiatric Surgical Residency Program. He is practicing with Richmond Bone and Joint Clinic in Richmond.
